What you should know before picking up Breath of the Wild (No Spoilers)

Breath of the Wild has been my latest addiction and I’d like to say that I’m trying to play less but if I’m being totally honest I can’t put the game down. I literally stopped a little while ago to write this and I'm rushing through because I want to get back to playing the game.

I could go on and on about how amazing the game is. How much fun it is. How addictive the gameplay is. How it’s been years since I played a game where I can’t wait to find out what I’ll discover right around the next bend or over the next hill.

To be honest I’d really like to talk about how I suspect this is the first Zelda game set not in a post apocalyptic future.

But no, I came to try and give people the best possible gaming experience by laying out a few things that people should know when picking this game up. Furthermore I’m going to do this without spoiling anything. I really feel that the best way to experience a game like this is to just get out there and do stuff. But with that said, there are a few things I wish right at the start of the game.

1. This game is NOT like Skyrim or past Legend of Zelda games

Lots of people have been hearing about the game and assuming that it’s the this new Zelda game is just a Dark Souls or Skyrim port with a Zelda skin. And it’s not that at all.  However it’s also not really similar to past Legend of Zelda games either. Breath of the Wild takes elements of Dark Souls and Skyrim, and even Fallout and puts them into this game. It’s very much an action/platformer puzzle game. Like Dark Souls its pretty unforgiving. If you want to survive you need to learn to not get hit, because many monsters you fight from the beginning of the game can KO you in one smack. But the game also has a heavy puzzle component. It’s not just fighting, there are many puzzles that start out easy but as you progress get trickier and more difficult to get through. And lastly this game was made to be beautiful. Unlike other post apocalyptic games like Fallout, or other fighting adventure games like Dark Souls, this game was made to look great. In this world the wilderness has reclaimed the land and it just looks amazing. There’s so many serene spots where you can spend time climbing mountains and running with goats and deer. It really gives you the feeling of this being massive world. That is until you run into another really tough enemy that KO’s you instantly. I also really love that unlike many games like this the NPC’s aren’t the same character model with different voices, skin tones and facial features. They do a good job of creating all different types of characters of varying sizes and shapes. And they’re also just as animated as they’ve ever been.

If you’re a Legend of Zelda veteran then here’s a couple of things you should know that set this game apart.

Pressing A always drops whatever you're holding and R always throws them. It was opposite in past Zelda games.

No bottles in this game. You want a fairy just grab it.

This game gives you everything at the start. While there are countless new weapons and items, you’ll find that the game doesn’t hold you back from anything. You’ll find you’ll get most of your usual items very quickly after you start the game.

You can jump.

Link does not play the whole game with his green tunic and cap. While the traditional Link outfit is hidden near the end of the game, you’ll spend most of the game switching between different outfits for the different benefits or abilities they provide. Also you’ll find this Link’s got a blue tunic and in fact the color blue has lots of significance in this game.

This game isn’t about traditional dungeons like past ones. It’s more about exploring the over world.

Some ruins are more that just decoration. Approach broken guardian robots and covered wagons to search them for loot.

2. This game is hard

Unlike past Zelda games this game is tough. Let’s be honest, Most 3D Zelda games focused more on the puzzle solving and making the boss battles fun. This game does not extend you that rope. It doesn’t hold your hand at all. My first death in this game came right away. And taking a note from games like Dark Souls or Fallout, it will toss in an enemy that you just aren’t equipped to handle right at the beginning, teaching you that sometimes your best option is to just run away. Even  regular enemies are much smarter than they are in normal Zelda games. They will avoid your bombs, dodge your attacks, pick up shields or better weapons, and react to your fighting style. However one way this game is different than say Dark Souls, is it doesn’t punish you for death. Seriously, where Dark Souls costs you your souls anytime you get killed without saving, Breath of the Wild has a pretty robust autosave system so  you’re encouraged to just jump into things and if you get your ass kicked, you can just try again using a different approach.

3. This game let’s you do everything right from the start.

So this one is mostly true. You are confined to a small area right at the beginning of the game, but this serves as a training ground as you learn all of your new abilities. Unlike other Zelda games were you gain new items that unlock new areas, in this game once you get the Paraglider, the whole world is open to you. No boss keys or special items. The game basically gives you all of your expected Legend of Zelda items right in that beginning section of the game it confines you to. Then from there it sets you lose to do whatever and go wherever the hell you want.  There’s no set path to your next goal, if you want to take a horse down the paved road, that’s fine. If you’d rather run up the side of the cliff and practice your climbing skills, that’s great too. Just have fun, and that's what gaming is all about.

4.     The game only tells you about maybe a quarter of all of it’s mechanics.

Recent Zelda games have had a habit of spoon feeding you information instead of letting you discover it on your own. There are tons of things you can do from the start of the game that the game just never tells you about. Some I saw in videos and assumed I had to be taught to do it, but no, the game allows you to do pretty much anything you want from the start. It leaves it for you to find out on your own. Lots of people have made lists about this stuff. Some things I think are fun(sometimes frightening) to discover on your own but here’s a few game mechanics you have from the beginning that the game doesn’t bother to tell you.

You can do a slow motion counter attack on enemies if you dodge their attacks just right.

You can parry attacks with your shield.

Fairies can be easily found just by cutting tall grass with your sword.

You can cook food by holding it and dropping it into the pot.

You can cook individual food items be dropping them on fire, lava, or event freeze them on frozen peaks.

Keep lots of stamina food dishes and you won’t have to worry about running out of energy when climbing taller cliffs.

You can drop bombs from the paraglider

Have a precision shot to make on a moving target? Jump from a high place or paraglide over the enemy and pull out your bow and arrow for a slow motion jump shot.

Need to get up high for that paraglider shot. Set some grass on fire to create an instant updraft that can send you up.

ChuChu Jelly can be made into a firebomb if dropped onto an open flame. Once it turns red just collect it. Later you can drop it in strategic places as a trap for enemies.

Short on cash or items. If you upgraded your camera you can set your tracker to seek out nearby treasure chests by taking a picture of one. Chests are literally all over the place in this game. You won’t get far before it starts beeping.

If you're stuck in a temple look up the challenge's name. It generally will hold a clue to what you need to do.

Keep trying new types of weapons. All of them have special benefits and shortcomings. Wooden weapons can spread fires, and won't get you struck by lightning but are weaker than swords. One handed swords are the most well rounded weapon and let you cut grass to look for items. Two handed weapons do more damage and can knock enemies shields right out of their hand, but they swing much slower. Spears have a long reach and are best for quick attacks, but they don't work so well against an enemy with a shield.

Those are just a few simple ones. Fact is there are  soooo many more. But I think it’s more fun if you discover them on your own. This will get you through lots of tough situations.

5. Start new games in different accounts or the game will delete your saves!!!!!!!!

Lastly and most importantly, you can’t have multiple playthroughs on one account. For some reason the game only lets you have one playthrough and if you start a new game it deletes the other game on that account. So if you have a sibling, spouse or parent who wants to play, please remember to have them switch accounts so that all of your progress isn’t deleted. It's a simple fix for this issue but that's a pretty big oversight on the developers side. When I tried to set up a new game for my brother I noticed it said delete last saved game and create a new one. I found out that in creating a new game it deletes your old saves. Simple solution is just to go into the settings and create a separate account for your spouse, friend, or sibling.

So the stuff I’ve brought up here is just scratching the surface of this game. It’s really the tip of the iceberg. This game is so huge and so amazing I can only advise that you pick it up now. It’s well worth the money and worth the cost of a Wii U or Switch by itself. Aside from their poorly set up save system this game is absolutely perfect.

Remember to just try stuff, you never know what might work in this game.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Review

Summer Blockbuster season seems to start earlier and earlier every year. Watch, in a decade we'll start the big budget action movie season in December. But probably this year's biggest movie was released this weekend. The Man of Steel and the Dark Knight duke it out.

Well... sort of...

And I have just one question for filmmaker Zack Snyder.....

Do you hate these characters? That's a serious question. Do you hate these DC characters, Superman in particular? If not then Why WHY WHYYYY would you do this to them?

Let's start from the beginning. Firstly I am a huge DC fan. Actually I'm a fan of all comic books, so don't even get me started on that ridiculous Marvel v DC debate. But I have a deep respect for these characters and their roots. It's understandable that they have to change as the times change, but not when you take them in a complete 180 degrees from what those characters were. The writers basically tossed them and tons of other characters into a meat grinder of a script and mashed up characters and storylines.  But let's break this down, let's talk about the good and the bad, and i'll do my best not to spoil stuff that's not in the trailers.

The Good

Alfred, Perry White, and Lois Lane. They seemed like real people and actually had some pretty good dialogue. I also liked that Wonder Woman has been around for possibly centuries and doesn't seem to age. Wonder Woman was a great added character and she was totally interesting. I'd love to see a film just on her and where she came from. I also think that they did a pretty good job with Batman's look. Personally I don't think that a Batman who kills people, works in a more realistic universe but I have to say this is the best Bat fighting I think I've ever seen. As awesome as the Dark Knight is, you have to admit you can't really see any of Batman's fight moves. And Ben Affleck actually did a good job playing the character.

I also thought there were a few good scenes that really got the characters down to their core. The scene where Superman questions his role here on Earth with Lois Lane was great. The scenes where he's haunted by the people he failed to save was good too. And most of the scenes with Alfred and Bruce were pretty well done.

Well as for the bad.....

The Characters

Zack Snyder, have you ever read a superman comic? Have you seen the Christopher Reeves movies? If so then you'll know that Superman is the beacon of hope, he is a character of warmth and love. He's supposed to represent the best of humanity. The superman in this movie seemed... like an alien. Every scene he seems so drifty and indifferent to everything. I know that Henry Cavil is a good actor. We all saw how great he could be in The Man From UNCLE. So why did he seem like he had only been on earth for a few days. He never has a tenth, a hundredth of the warmth and the positivity that Christopher Reeves had when he played the iconic character.

Hell we even go more warmth out of Brandon Routh when he played the character.

Hell there was more to the character in Smallville

And as much as I liked Ben Affleck's Batman does every line he reads have to be a catchphrase? And why does he kill. A murderous Batman kinda worked in the Tim Burton universe as that was an exaggerated crazy version of things. But in a real world.... a guy going around and killing people with no trial. That's the Punisher not the dark knight. Batman has always played judge and jury but he only turned them over to the police. Playing executioner is too far. A guy who isn't a police officer and answers to nobody... you're basically describing George Zimmerman and that is NOT my Batman. I mean would he have killed Superman if their mom's didn't have the same name. Is he really interested in killing someone who he really doesn't know or understand??? Seriously I'm supposed to root for this guy. He sounds like the villain in any other movie.
Lastly Lex Luthor. Most people were angry about how he played it more like the riddler or the joker than lex. I really didn't mind that they changed up his character, but my issue was that it seemed like he was the stand in for the critics of the first movie. The same way that M. Night Shyamalan put a literal movie critic in his movie Lady in the Water.

I'm disappointed too

Still these are all talented people. If I blame anyone it's the writers. Afterall they're the ones who fucked up....

The Plot

What was happening in this movie. It seemed more like a stream of unrelated scenes rather than a movie. The are weird dream sequences that seem out of place, and why why why would you include doomsday. This movie is trying to do too much. First you introduce almost all of the characters from the comic book, doing none of them justice. On top of that none of this is earned. Doomsday... in the second fucking film!?!? That storyline firstly isn't that great to begin with, and secondly why did you think you could just mash up the Dark Knight Returns and Superman Doomsday into one film when you know that you couldn't do one of those stories right in a single film.

And on top of that, it's the worst CGI since the Green Lantern movie

I knew this film was in trouble with Snyder brought out Frank Miller and started reading from one of the greatest comics of all time "The Dark Knight Returns" But that comic worked because it was Superman and Batman fighting at the END of their careers not the beginning! Guess what, we've seen this fight in the comics, and in the animated tv show, and in the comic books AGAIN! It always ends with them realizing they're on the same side. Every single fucking time, meaning that we went into this movie with no stakes. Nothing.

You mean we're on the same side... Boy, I sure do feel like kind of an asshole now

Before I get accused of being a Marvel fanboy I should tell you that as a 90's kid who grew up watching the DC animated universe (still to this date the definitive iteration of those characters in the audio visual medium), most of my favorite characters are actually DC characters. To this date my favorite comic book characters are ...

Swamp Thing

Batman

Superman

Wolverine

Green Lantern (John Stewart Version)

Captain America

The Flash (Wally West Version)

Daredevil

I think that new interpretations of characters are great but you have to remember what's at their core. And this movie turns Batman and Superman into idiots. They seriously couldn't work this out without fighting? I know, Lex Luthor is a genius but still the fact that he played these two like puppets is just disturbing.

The two guys seriously were just ready to kill each other??? Over what? Again this fight wasn't earned. The two characters came to a point in The Dark Knight Returns. Here... it just seems rushed and lazy at the same time. These characters are supposed to be our heroes and yet they can't seem to work out their shit without getting into the biggest pissing contest the planet has ever seen. Superman in particular is not just a big tough guy who punches stuff. That's the HULK. Superman is a born leader, he's the voice of reason, the big blue boyscout, guy who will always put others needs in front of his own and can't help but try to save everybody.

I love these characters and I just want to see them done right. Please DC.... GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!!! Between the new 52 and this I'm starting to wonder if they even like those characters I grew to love in the 90's.

Wait what's that? I have to give the movie a rating?

Okay....

I give it a rating of: Buy a ticket to see Deadpool instead and afterward sneak into this movie. I say that because the more money you give them, the more they'll think that they made the right decisions. Remember, studios don't read reviews, they only see one thing and that's green.

Justice League!!! We need your help. You're greatest enemy has revealed himself It's Zack Snyder and whatever DC Execs thought this script and the new 52 was a good idea. GO GET THEM!!

The Only Way the New Indiana Jones Reboot Can Be Succesful

So the cat's outta the bag, pandora's box has been opened, the floodgates have been breached!

There is serious talk of Steven Spielberg directing a new Indiana Jones film, with Chris Pratt as the titular character. And people are freaking ....        the fuck    .....        out.

Personally I have lots of mixed feelings about it. Anyone who knows me, knows that Raiders of the Lost Ark is absolutely one of my favorite childhood films. Steven Spielberg was one of my idols as a kid. I wanted to make movies just like him. And I can say pretty easily that Raiders is still to this day, maybe the greatest adventure film ever made.

This shot is from Temple of Doom but you get the concept. He's a bad ass.

So how can they reboot this and have it work? Well there is a simple answer. Don't make it a reboot. Make it the further adventures of Indiana Jones.

If they want people to be on board for this they cannot, and I mean CANNOT, remake Raiders of the Lost Ark. This needs to be a brand new adventure with Indy.

At least for the next 7 - 10 years

Look at the James Bond or Batman Franchises. New actors take on that role every decade....

Okay so sometimes it's even less that a decade.

They don't remake the movies they just do new adventures with the same character.

And I'd argue that while he hasn't been around quite as long, Indiana Jones is just as dynamic and interesting a character. Who wouldn't want to see more adventures from him.

Pratt is honestly a good choice. I mean he's got the looks, the charm, and most importantly the comedic timing to carry the role.

My only concern is if he can carry the Indy's serious side. He has to be able to carry the line of ...

And he has to say it with the same level of earnestness and seriousness as Harrison Ford. It can't sound like a joke or a cliché. Not an easy task.... Kudos to Ford

That's the way we should do future Indiana Jones films. Every decade a new actor portrays him. But Harrison Ford will ALWAYS be the original.

If they do that AND get Spielberg to direct then I'm on board 100%.

What's your take?????

Curse of Chucky Review

Curse of Chucky is the sixth installment in the Child's Play/Chucky franchise and was released widely in October of 2013.

Now I was a bit worried when I heard that the next Chucky movie would be straight to DVD/Blu Ray and that the Chucky doll looked so strange in this film. However those worries were calmed by the knowledge that the movie has Brad Dourif reprising his role as Chucky and Don Mancini, the creator of the character, was back to write and direct. With the tiny budget of 5 million dollars and Brad Dourif's daughter in the lead we get surprisingly one of the best movies in the series.

I'm a long time Chucky fan. Child's Play was one of the first slasher movies I'd ever seen and was part of my induction into the horror genre. People seem to like taking a shit on the Child's Play franchise nowadays, but I love it anyway. I've never really found Chucky scary, I just love him as a character. How often do you have a slasher film where the slasher themselves is in near as much danger as the victim. He's got to be clever with how he kills because he's not really that strong or fast. The element of surprise is his only advantage. But honestly I watch the movies for Chucky himself. To me, Chucky is one of the most charismatic of all the slasher killers.

Isn't he just hilarious!

Michael Myers and Jason are both silent. Freddie Kruger has these clever one liners and jokes that he sets up. Pinhead from Hellraiser is so regal with his threats. Chucky is just a dude who likes to kill people, and happens to be trapped in the body of a little ginger midget. He's totally inelegant about it. As an eleven year old, hearing Chucky speak for the first time was amazing.

11 year old me:  Were his first words 'You stupid bitch'????......     I freakin' love this guy!!!
I laughed my ass of throughout the movies. And this one is no different.

But onto this movie.

It's a micro film, taking place primarily in one location. Fiona Dourif, Brad's surprisingly attractive daughter, is the lead as our wheelchair bound heroine.

We start off with Chucky being mailed to this ostensibly random and unfortunate family, and hilarity ensues. They really make you wait to find out why he's there. All you know is that it's Chucky, so people are gonna die. Now what works with this movie is the fact that it goes back to the creepier elements of the early movies, while still acknowledging the later ones. You'll have to watch the movie yourself to see why Chucky has decided to visit this particular family, but I can tell you that Bride of Chucky, and Seed of Chucky are still canon and the film does reference them.

Another thing is that the kills are fantastic. One of the biggest separators of a mediocre slasher film from a really fun one; is how creative and gruesome the kills are. And they defiantly deliver on that front in this movie. There's one in particular that will make even avid fans of The Walking Dead go .......

I also love that this movie is funny without TRYING to be funny. My biggest issue with Seed of Chucky was that they kept inserting jokes and trying to turn it into a slapstick comedy. The premise of Child's Play (a foul mouthed, 2ft tall, ginger serial killer) is slapstick enough. The comedy is inherent in the story, you don't need to add jokes. The Child's play films have always made me laugh and cheer but not because they were delivering a bunch of corny jokes, they just were funny.

A doll with freckles and bright blue eyes screaming a bunch of curse words is funny on it's own, don't make him do 'The Shining' references

This movie takes it all seriously. And there are some genuinely surprising and scary moments in this film. The story is pretty simple but it has some interesting twists and turns. Making the lead wheelchair bound was a great move. She is effectively slower and less agile that Chucky is, making him a much larger threat to her. And it has one of the best, end of the credits stingers I've ever seen. EVER!!

Overall I have to say that after watching it and having some time to think about it, this movie is my second favorite in the series after the original. That makes my ranking of the Chucky movies...

1.
Child's Play
2.
Curse of Chucky

3.
Bride of Chucky
4.
Child's Play 2

And the Red-headed Step Children of the series.

5.
Child's Play 3
6.
Seed of Chucky

So this film comes highly recomened. If you like slashers and especially if you like them to be fun I'd highly recommend it. Now you can see this one without having seen the others and still enjoy it but I would recommend you watch at least the first two before moving on to this one.

So there you have it, Curse of Chucky, at Redboxes everywhere so....

So go get yourself a copy!!!!!
